Kunstsammlung NRW
Everyone is an artist. Cosmopolitan exercises with Joseph Beuys

Joseph Beuys would have turned 100 in 2021. This is reason enough to not only look back into the past, but also to show how he, as a sculptor, teacher, activist, and action and installation artist has fundamentally changed art to this day. Beuys, who was often regarded as a thoroughly “German” artist, thought universally and has indeed influenced artists on all continents.

The exhibition at the Kunstsammlung NRW, one of Deutsche Bank’s ArtCard partner museums, makes the cosmopolitan thinking, especially in Beuys’ actions, tangible. In addition, it shows how topical his social thinking was, especially in these difficult times, and allows his work to enter into a transcultural dialogue with contemporary artists and representatives from diverse spheres of society. From today’s perspective, they confirm, question, and expand Beuys' theses on the possibilities of a future shaped by art.
